This week I thought I’d talk about maternity sessions and what to wear to look your best and accentuate that lovely bump.
First let’s talk about when your session should take place. I generally like to shoot maternity sessions between 32-36 weeks depending on how much the mother to be is showing. If you are like me, you need to get in early because I swear from the minute I found out I was pregnant with my son my bump appeared and around 6 months I looked like I was full term. Of course my baby was born at a whopping 9 pounds 14 ounces so I like to say he was the reason I showed so quickly. We’ll just go with that!
Secondly, below are several suggestions for choosing the right clothes for your maternity session. This list is helpful in knowing what to look for when shopping and also what you should avoid.
DO
Wear form-fitting tanks and tops
Layer your clothing (tank top and sweater) to add texture
Flowy dresses or skirts paired with a form fitting top look wonderful together and are very flattering
Empire style dresses or shirts
Solid colors work best
Tops with a v-neck or scoop neck
Accessories – long necklaces are perfect and draw attention to your beautiful belly
Dark denim jeans without the pregnancy band showing paired with a pretty tank
Fun and/or colorful shoes
Wear a supportive bra, it does wonders!
DON’T
Avoid large patterns and stripes
Too tight of clothing (form fitting is different than tight)
Oversized clothing
Lastly, below is a list of store suggestions.
Last week I photographed a mother to be and she did an amazing job pulling her outfit together. We definitely discussed clothing ahead of time and sent several emails of suggestions and she even emailed me pictures from her camera phone of her outfits to get my opinion. I love when clients to do this and definitely encourage you to do the same when you book your photography session with me!
